Garden for entertaining in the Chilterns

BRIEF

This garden design in the Chilterns was created to provide plenty of seating space for the owners to eat outside and entertain friends and family. The brief was for a low maintenance contemporary garden design.

This garden design in Chinnor, Buckinghamshire was for new build property with an L shaped plot that wrapped around the back of the garage. We wanted to make the best use of the space and the fabulous view towards the Chiltern Hills from one section of the garden.

The garden backed onto fields with a lovely open outlook, but there was poor drainage along the boundary with the adjoining field.

DESIGN SOLUTION

Our design for this garden incorporated a new terrace adjacent to the house with lounge furniture and an additional dining area covered by a pergola. This was placed near the boundary of the garden to take advantage of the view of the Chiltern Hills. This and other elements of the design were added along the far boundary to replace the existing lawn that would have struggled to grow with the poor drainage in that area.

The back of the garage that extended into the garden created quite a large expanse of brick wall. We created more of an ‘outdoor room’ feeling by adding a feature wall of decorative screens to one wall and espaliered fruit trees to the other, very sunny, wall. This formed part of a raised bed area for growing herbs, fruit and vegetables.

The planting scheme used simple repeats of a small number of species to add impact and create easier maintenance.
