Cottage and Mediterranean fusion
BRIEF
This garden design in Buckinghamshire was designed to blend the traditional cottage garden surroundings with a Mediterranean garden aesthetic.
This fascinating property combined contemporary with traditional architecture – a thatched cottage which had been extended to include a contemporary facade to the rear of the house. The extension was designed by architects Lynne Palmer. We often work with architect designs to ensure that our garden and landscape designs compliment the property, and enhance the connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. We have established a reputation to blending contemporary garden design ideas with a sensitivity to more rural and traditional settings so we were excited to work with this client who also wanted us to try and combine a Mediterranean style of planting together with more traditional cottage garden design.
The brief for this garden design in Buckinghamshire was to include sun traps where the owners could enjoy a hot tub and G&T! They also provided us with the specification for several outbuildings – an office / gymn, storage sheds and a greenhouse. The owners had recently started a family so we wanted to incorporate plenty of space for children to play within the garden design.
DESIGN SOLUTION
For this garden design in Buckinghamshire we created a strong axis running diagonally across the garden, reinforced by straight lines nearer the house, but giving way to a less formal series of meandering paths and islands of planting further down the garden. The space was divided into 3 zones:
- House terrace and formal lawn – for dining and playing games
- Mediterranean style lounge area – for relaxing, sunbathing and hot tub. The home office also looked out onto this area – for real work/life balance!
- Meadow and productive area – a therapeutic walk through ornamental meadow planting, to the green house surrounded by more geometrically laid out raised beds and fruit trees
