Spiral front garden design

BRIEF

This front garden design near Thame, Oxfordshire is starting to turn heads. Our client wanted to create more curb appeal with their front garden which would compliment their historic thatched cottage. They were looking for a Buckinghamshire garden designer to help them create a more interesting front garden which consisted of just a hard to maintain lawn and a few roses next to the house. The client initially asked us to add some planting around the edges of the lawn, but we could see the potential for a garden that would create more of a wow factor at the same time as being lower maintenance. We wanted to maximise the budget for the garden transformation and designed the garden to create a real impact whilst not being too complex to build.

DESIGN SOLUTION

We worked closely with the client to develop a fresh vision for their garden and designed a scheme that would turn heads as people walked past this picturesque location. We removed the lawn and designed a curved path, edged with stone setts, that flowed through the space into a spiral with a sundial at its centre. The spiral path was surrounded by a modern cottage garden mix of Roses, Geraniums and Campanulas, together with other perennials and bold ornamental grasses, surrounding clematis clad obeliscs. Towards the front of the garden we added cottage garden plants that would seed themselves into and over the natural stone boundary wall.

The client was delighted with the result and has since asked us to design a masterplan for their large back garden. This is what our client said about the garden design we did for them:

“Richard designed our new front garden. He transformed it from a boring old-fashioned lawn with some borders into an interesting, colourful and exciting cottage garden. He helped manage the entire process from ideas and colour-schemes through to ordering and receiving the plants. We’ve had endless compliments from people wandering by, and look forward to seeing it develop and grow.”

We occasionally do front garden design only, especially as we did for this garden in SW London
