Contemporary Shady Front Garden Design, Kingston
BRIEF
We were commissioned to redesign this front garden in Kingston, where available light was significantly restricted by a railway embankment and mature trees.
The principal challenge was therefore horticultural as well as aesthetic: to create an attractive contemporary entrance to the property using planting that would genuinely thrive in the conditions rather than selecting plants for appearance alone.
DESIGN SOLUTION
Plant selection was central to the design.
The palette was developed first around plants suited to partial shade, but they also needed to provide sufficient structure, texture and seasonal interest for the front garden to remain engaging throughout the year.
The planting was composed to give the garden a more stylish contemporary character while responding honestly to the environmental conditions of the site.
Rather than treating the restricted light simply as a problem, it became one of the factors defining the character of the planting design.
