Journey of life garden

BRIEF

We were asked to design this journey of life garden on behalf of a charity for the RHS Hampton Court Flower festival. We were delighted to be asked as we have established a reputation for producing creative garden designs with a meaning. We have designed a number of garden designs that focus on gardens for health and wellbeing so we enjoyed creating this design which encourages people to reflect on the legacy they might leave as they journey through life. We love producing creative garden design ideas that not only look beautiful but touch people at a deeper level.

DESIGN SOLUTION

A garden design project like this really allowed us to flex our creative muscles.

The garden quickly engages the visitor in the central theme – that we can be thinking NOW about how we might leave a legacy.

The garden is divided into 3 equal areas – representing the phases of life that we pass through. Each of these areas is divided by a radial rill that runs to a pool at the centre of the garden and marks a transition from one life stage to the next. Each phase is marked by an obelisk, increasing in height, at each stage of life.

We designed another wellbeing garden for another RHS garden show

A spiral path enters the garden at Childhood, passes through Adulthood, Mid-life, and enters old age as it crosses into the central area. A central pool represents the ‘eternal’ fed by the 3 rills that run from each of the life stages.

The rills and vistas through the planting, lead the eye to the central pool and a metallic Obelisk which is lazer-cut with the words ‘Leave a Legacy’. It is triangular in shape so that the same message can be seen by looking along each rill. This immediately engages the viewer in asking the questions about the meaning of leaving a Legacy and how it relates to the journey of life.
