Garden for an active family

BRIEF

We were commissioned to create a garden design that would meet the varied and changing needs of this active family in North London. The brief was challenging as the garden needed to accommodate a sizeable area for the children to play football at the same time as offer some secluded spaces for the parents to feel that they could more fully ‘inhabit’ the garden. There also needed to be a productive area and plenty of space for dining and entertaining. As they were keen gardeners, we carefully designed the planting for year round interest, and including space for them to experiment with new plants.

DESIGN SOLUTION

The space was carefully divided into areas for activity and areas for relaxation, utilising both walls, new trees and raised planting beds. These rectangular raised beds complimented the architecture of the house and were built at different heights to create interest and frame the planting. They also helped protect both the plants and family members sitting on the terrace from stray footballs!

We created a ‘portal’ in the boundary wall that could be used to access a fruit and vegetable garden and aligned this with a circular water feature. A new garden ‘yoga studio’ was built into the boundary wall to provide a min ‘retreat’ and views to the woodland beyond. The building was an innovative use of space and created views into and out of the garden.

A new pergola with a retractable roof was added along the length of the house to provide shade for dining and relaxation.

We worked closely with the client for over a year to create a garden that they were delighted with. To discuss how we could create your dream garden contact us for a free consultation.
