Garden Design Trends 2023

Garden design is constantly evolving, and there are always new and exciting trends emerging. Here are some of the garden design trends expected to be popular in 2023:

Garden Design trend #1 Eco-Friendly Gardens

Sustainability is becoming a more important factor in garden design. Gardens are being designed with the environment in mind, incorporating native plants, water conservation techniques, and environmentally friendly materials. When we plan the detailed design and construction of a garden we look to minimise the amount of waste that has to transported and disposed of – for example, by using soil that has had to be removed in one area of the garden to create a ‘landform’ in another area. We also try to recycle materials were possible, as we did in this Buckinghamshire garden design, where we cleaned and reused the paving slabs.

Garden Design trend #2 Vertical Gardens

Vertical gardens are becoming increasingly popular as people look for ways to make the most of their outdoor space. Vertical gardens can be created using a variety of materials, such as living walls, trellises, or stacked planters. They offer a great way to bring greenery into smaller outdoor spaces and can also be used to create privacy. We have used ‘green walls’ to break up large expanses of wall, as we did here in this garden design near Aylesbury, where we installed a living green wall as a backdrop to the dining area. We have also used artificial green walls where maintenance was felt to be too onerous, but the addition of a green wall created an immersive outdoor living space – as we did in this commercial garden design in Buckinghamshire and this residential courtyard garden design in Berkshire.

Garden Design trend #3 Outdoor Living Spaces

Outdoor living spaces are becoming more popular as people look for ways to extend their living space into the outdoors. Outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and comfortable seating areas are all elements that can be incorporated into a garden design to create a functional and relaxing outdoor living space. We were excited to work a contemporary garden design near Oxford where the clients wanted to include an outdoor kitchen – where we designed the space so that the plants felt very much part of the kitchen and dining area.

Garden Design trend #4 Minimalist Design

Minimalist design is becoming increasingly popular in garden design, with clean lines, simple shapes, and a focus on functionality. This style is characterised by the use of limited materials, such as stone, wood, and metal, and a focus on the natural landscape. When our clients are lucky enough to have an irresitable view, we usually create a garden design that enhances and compliments the view as we did for this garden design in the Chilterns.

Garden Design trend #5  Edible Gardens

Edible gardens are becoming more popular as people look for ways to grow their own food. This trend incorporates fruit trees, vegetable gardens, and herb gardens into a traditional garden design, offering a practical and attractive way to grow fresh, healthy food. We are frequently asked to include areas of ‘productive garden’ for the family to enjoy growing their own fruit and vegetables, as we did for this garden design in Oxfordshire.

These are just a few of the latest trends in garden design, which reflect a focus on functionality, beauty, and sustainability in garden design. Whether you’re looking to create a sustainable garden, an outdoor living space, or an edible garden, there’s a garden design trend that’s perfect for you.
